Getting More Independent.....

Getting more independent the chicks are now beginning to explore the garden on their own as well as hanging out with the rest of the flock.
They do tend to keep together though, and occasionally one suddenly realises that they are on their own and calls out frantically for mama.
We have had a couple of scares with a predator hanging around, I stood guard for over an hour one afternoon as they were seperated from the rest of the flock and vulnerable.
They knew instinctively that risking a dash for mama was not a good idea and quivered under one of the trees making distressed calls as I kept close by.
Once the all clear is sent out from the look out bird of the garden they rushed to find their mother.
Nova also knew risking a move towards her babies was not a good idea.
Aslan is spending more time with the chicks, which is really beautiful to watch, and the other hens are not too aggressive towards them. Mind you, they are so fast that I doubt the bigger hens could keep up with them in any case.
Having these little beings growing up in the garden has been so delightful.
It is amazing watching how fast they change and grow, seven weeks ago they were barely seen in the grass, now they are nearly half the size of their mother.
The miraculous gift of life always so fascinating to witness.....
