Kuljak Island....

Kuljak Island or Black Swan Island has only been discovered by me recently. Not in an area I would normally associate with nature, it really is a place of beauty. There were lots of colonies of mushrooms that I saw on the hour long meander around the island. And with so many different species I was thrilled. As with my garden many flowers were now blooming as the colder weather and rains have begun. Wintertime in western australia is a time of colour as the plants begin to flourish after the hotter months.

The first time I came here nearly a month ago with the grandpups only a couple of plants were in flower, yesterday though, there was a large show of flowers around the whole island.

Although heard, birds were not really seen. The treetops were alive with tiny birds and honeyeaters, yet they were too well camouflaged to get a photo. Plus they were rarely still. There were a few ducks on the water and a few more water bird scattered about. No black swans were spotted though.

Parts of the island had a forest type feeling as the branches intertwined overhead and created a canopy, the ground covered with leaves and the pine needle like leaves from many sheoaks, this created a quiet and magical feeling, and at times I totally forgot how close to the city I was. Along the shore line the paperbark trees also created mini habitats for small mammals and birds alike.

Such a peaceful and interesting place to visit especially on a week day. Not many people were out enjoying this lovely place so I was able to really soak up the natural ambience......
