A few years ago I helped care for all these little babies who had all lost their mothers.
The kangaroos lost their mothers to cars, as did the little possum.
Caring for these beautiful orphaned babes was very humbling, feed time for the joey's was pretty full on, they all wanted their bottles at the same time and once they figured out how to get out of their fluffy beds it was absolute chaos.
Trying to get them back into the pouches was quite a challenge as they all hopped around in different directions.
What I loved the most about the joey's was how they bonded so well with the humans looking after them, the possum on the other hand was not as happy to be around humans and would bite if suddenly startled, but also we did not want the possum to become too friendly with humans, she needed to be kept as wild as possible during the rehabilitation period.
Having two pink and grey galahs running up my arms was so amazing, these two liked to get behind my hair and squawk for their food, it was noisy and messy but also very special.
All of them survived, but that is not the case with all bush babies who loose their mothers, these were really lucky, checking the pouches of female kangaroos hit by cars is really important just in case a baby is alive inside.
The joey's all went to a sanctuary well away from roads and hopefully are still happy and well to this day, the possum and the galahs were all released near where they were found once they were old enough and strong enough to survive on their own.....
