An awesome adventure venturing to the wildlife haven a short boat ride off the coast, the destination, Penguin Island.
For a change I wasn't alone to enjoy the many wonders of this nature reserve taking my dearest friend along with me to explore this tiny but incredible island.
The ocean calm, the sun warm and the amount of nesting birds was unbelievable. The last time I went to the island was in 2008 and in the colder months and I didn't explore as much as we did yesterday. I had never seen so many pelicans in one place, nor seagulls for that matter. The island is the perfect place for the birds to nest and from the moment we stepped off the boat the squawking of protesting birds began as warnings to keep away from their babies.
There are no snakes on the island but it does have many king skinks who could be seen slithering through the brush hunting for eggs and the unfortunate chicks that couldn't scurry away quick enough. It was a real glimpse into the fight for survival and the circle of life. Thankfully we were not witness to any chicks losing their lives.
The island has no cafe and there are no bins provided, whatever rubbish the humans may have are to be taken back to the mainland with them. This helps to keep the wildlife safe and the island pristine.
Part two of the adventure is coming in the next post...
