The spectacular seed pod of a calendula flower a carrier of life. The planting of seeds is always a humbling experience as within a few days you are a witness to birthing. Taking the time to really appreciate the miracle life in a garden is food for the soul.
In hindsight I ought to have taken photos of the jars of seeds that went into the earth yesterday, as many other seed pods were equally spectacular..
Along the back fence we planted giant sunflowers, red poppies and then a bee and butterfly mix. This includes;
Mexican giant hyssop
Queen Anne's lace
Butterfly weed
Lemon beebalm
Borage,
Common hares ear
Californian poppy
Catnip,
Cornflower
Chives
Tricoloured daisy
Garden cosmos
Sweet William
Common foxglove
Blue tansy,
French marigold
Blanket flower
Upright prairie coneflower
Lace-leafed coroposis
Purple coneflower
Love-in-a-mist
and lastly rocky mountain penstemon
The calendula seeds were scattered among the food seeds. Again a wonderful mixture was planted some randomly, others like the pea seeds along the fence line so they have somewhere to grow up. In front of the peas the broad beans were planted giving height at the fence line with a marvelous mixture of smaller food and herbs growing below.
The colours of all the flowers will bring a vibrancy to the this area as the food matures and in turn offers salad greens, bitter greens as well as peas and beans, carrots and radishes.
With the rains not forthcoming as one had hoped with the arrival of autumn, I have committed to watering the garden to ensure the seeds survive as the days continue to be warm and dry......
