A Quenda...

A Quenda hopping into view when visiting a local business today was just delightful. And of course I sat down and was happy to watch this little one coming up for a drink and food.

Often confused with rats the Quenda or southern brown bandicoot are omnivore marsupials that are only found on the southernmost tips of Australia. There was once twelve bandicoot species in Australia, but like most other native species some are now extinct and others like the Quenda are endangered due to humanisation of their habitat.

Speaking to the owners of the business I discovered that they have a whole little family  of Quendas which have free run of the garden and dog biscuits (apparently they love them) and fresh water available all the time......

A cute critter. I've never heard of them before.

I don't think they are as popular as kangaroos and koalas which is why no one outside Australia has ever heard of them. They are really cute.
