Inspired to look up while out walking I immediately understood why.
Only inches above my head was a wasp nest that seemed to be in the midst of hatching.
Of course I was fascinated.
It's not every day one stumbles across such moments.
These have different colouring of the native paper wasps I normally see, so I wondered if they were hornets?
Trying to identify them on the internet proved a challenge, but I am pretty sure they are wasps. They were not aggressive in the slightest, which is just as well as I would have been in trouble if they had of been.
Wasps are beneficial to the environment as they feed on nectar thus helping with pollination. They also feed insect larvae to their young which can be beneficial to those who like me don't use any chemicals or pesticides in their gardens...
