Blue Tongue Lizards...

Blue tongue lizards are beginning to come out seeking the sunshine now the weather is heating up. I crossed paths with this little one a couple of weeks ago.
They actually belong to the skink family and are normally quite chunky. Their blue tongue is a defence mechanism, because of the contrast to the rest of the body this tends to scare predators off. They are good to have living in your garden as they eat a variety of garden pests. The young don't tend to move far from their parents. They are also masters in camouflage, as these pictures demonstrate, if they don't move you might not even see them. I have a couple who live in the garden, yet I rarely see them...
