The best birthday present ever was a visit to Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Sanctuary. The sanctuary focuses on rehabilitation of the three species of black cockatoos here in Western Australia. Sadly, though these birds are critically endangered with loss of habitat and predation as well as harm done to them by humans.
Those that will be released are kept well away from visitors to the sanctuary, keeping them distrustful of humans which helps them survive. Those that are not able to be released are kept in a massive enclosure where visitors can go in and interact with them.
It was an experience that I shall always treasure. The birds are extremely friendly, very cheeky and utterly adorable....
