A morning visit to Bells Rapids ended in disaster yesterday with Banjo tearing one of his pads in half and having to be rushed to the vet for an emergency operation to sew the pad back together.
While frolicking through the bush at full pelt and heading to the water to have swim Banjo landed on something with such a force that the impact of the injury sent small rocks and sand deep into the cut.
With no idea what it was that caused the injury and unable to stop the bleeding it was off to the emergency vet.
A day of worry and the journey to healing the injury is going to be a long one, he is not to run or play for a month and needs to be kept very quiet, and for a kelpie that will be a challenge all of it's own.
Banjo is a boisterous and playful pup and is always on the go so keeping him quite and from pulling off the bandage will be a feat.
When he stumbled in on wobbly legs arriving home after his ordeal he began crying when he was reunited with his brother Cooper, Cooper being the best big brother went up immediately to soothe Banjo giving him licks and nudges comforting him as best he could.
Having no real evidence of what it was that Banjo injured himself on we were left guessing, however, I am guessing it was more than likely a piece of glass, unfortunately there are those who frequent Bells Rapids to drink alcohol and then smash the empty bottles on the rocks leaving dangerous glass fragments there to cause injuries such as this one of Banjo's, in my walks around the area I have collected as much as a shopping bag full of glass shards on just one visit.
The healing journey is going to be a long one, and there are concerns that the pad may not heal at all and may have to be taken off completely, lucky for him he has a family who will ensure that he has the best possible medical care and lots of love and cuddles which of course is the best medicine of all.........
