This crested pigeon was taking a break on a fence giving me the perfect opportunity to get a few photographs. Crested pigeons are quite nervous birds, they normally startle easily, taking flight to safety. They are striking birds, the crest on their head I feel adds to their loveliness.
They are found throughout Australia, although originally they were restricted to arid and semi arid areas, now they have migrated to most parts of Australia and seem to be thriving as an urban species.
The crested pigeon makes a whistling sound as it takes off, this is caused by vibrations of the wing feathers. This is called a aeroelastic flutter...
