I decided that I am going to glide into 2026 gracefully, with fresh unwritten days shimmering on the horizon all waiting to be penned into existence.
I am not one for making new year resolutions, having said that though I was inspired when I saw this diary, so I am going to focus even more on the wonderful Australian native animals in 2026.
We are never too old to learn something new, and given nature is my temple I love learning something new about the glorious natural realm that surrounds me.
The first marsupial pictured below is the mahogany glider, native to Queensland, so not one I would encounter all the way over here in Western Australia.
They are highly endangered, and only found in one small pocket of Queensland.
Out of the seven gliding possums in Australia, this is the most threatened of all. Once again it is destruction of habitat by humans who never seem to understand, nor care that other species have homes and families in the woodland and bushlands that they destroy.
Thankfully though, there is a colony on Hinchinbrook Island, which is a wilderness national park, so this is great news for the survival of these precious beings.
They can cruise up to 60 metres in the air, which must be absolutely incredible to see.
They are super soft and velvety to the touch with the most beautiful faces. They tend to mate for life and will have one to two babies per year...
