Hearing the distinctive call of red tailed black cockatoos overhead, I searched the treetops for a glimpse of these magnificent birds, whilst dodging their discarded honky nuts. This time of year the fruit of the native trees, is at it peak, and this is one of their favourite foods.
Although I could hear many in the canopy, there was only one who poked his head high enough for me to see. The wind was strong and the branches swished from side to side, as did this fellows head feathers.
These birds however are critically endangered here in Western Australia, the once large flocks, are now sadly down to smaller families.
The biggest threat to these birds is loss of habitat, due to killing the forests for humanity to spread its devastating impact further than needed.
These birds live very social lives, constantly communicating whilst they feed.
I will always stop when I see them, for me they are sacred birds and hold a very special place in my heart...
