The flower of a Xanthorrhoea always makes for a stunning photo as it stretches upward.
More common names for these plants are balga tree, grasstree, grass gum-tree, kangaroo tail tree and blackboy.
They are slow growing and it can take up to 30 years for the plants to get a significant size trunk. The plant was used as bush food and medicine, the leaves at their base are sweet and nutty. The heart of the stem is also eaten. There is also a white pulp that is found in the stem by cutting off the top of the plant, this was used as medicine. The flowers were soaked for their nectar as like many other native flowers they offer a sweet drink.
I find them to be very interesting as they flower as sometimes they grow in some wonderful shapes as they surge upward seeking the light.....
