Working With....

Working with one of my clients today to keep expanding on her own unique artistic style I first assisted her to create a background in the colours of her choice.
That done it was time to use charcoal to draw her creature as she calls them. She recently began to change her style of having many creatures featured on one canvas, to doing one figure and learning to work in layers. Having watched this process I am now helping her expand on what she has learnt.
Several more colours where selected to fill in the creature. Being a bit dark and after her father referred to it as scary I selected some more happier colors to brighten the piece and suggested she use a different brush stroke, then came the dots. The finished painting is stunning as she had tapped into her aboriginal heritage and created her version of a wandjina.
Wandjina's are rain and cloud being depicted in cave paintings many many thousands of years ago.. I have put in an image from a how wandjinas are normally painted as the last photo and I feel that it is easy to see the similarities.
This artist normally creates scary and playful creatures from the stories her mother told to her as a child. Her unique style has given her the opportunity to have had many an exhibition and she is gaining a name for herself. The Western Australian art gallery having purchased one of works last year is really going to change the direction her art will go.......
