Royal spoonbills are rather striking birds, and one of the most difficult to photograph, well for me anyway. They always seem to be too far away for a decent shot. This one though was meandering along a path, until I took a photograph, then it promptly flew off!
Spoonbills are found throughout the world, the royal spoonbill and the yellow billed spoonbill are the two found in Australia. The later, is the more elusive of the two.
I find them fascinating, the way their bill is designed to detect prey in the water, due to sensors on the inside of the bill that picks up even the slightest of movements in the water, what an intriguing design. Watching them wading through the water hunting is enthralling and something I will always pause to observe...
