A nesting pair of Australasian Grebes had constructed this wonderful nest. Although the nest has the appearance of floating, the parents actually anchor it to vegetation underwater.
Perhaps not in the safest of places as there was nothing to camouflage the nest from predators.
The Australasian Grebe is a small duck like water bird, they are frequently seen at lakes as they prefer fresh water. The chicks are fed feathers from the parents, it's believed that this is to prevent injury from fish bones. The female will lay four to five eggs, which are cared for by both parents, the chicks are independent in eight weeks at which time they are chased away from the nest...
